Q: Why is networking and showing up to campus events so important?
As a freshman, I went to a Big Four night sponsored by the Black Business Association. Only four of us showed up, so we basically got one-on-one time with recruiters. That connection led to future interviews and opportunities.
College is the one time in your life where all resources are thrown at you—companies are literally coming to recruit you. Professors, career fairs, staff—they’re all available if you take advantage. When you show up, recruiters can put a face to your resume, which makes you stand out.
And don’t underestimate your peers—your network starts as early as freshman year. Those classmates become the people you’ll call on for referrals or jobs later in your career. It’s never too early to start building that network.
