Manifestation Through Mentorship: The Key to Building Your Dream Career in Accounting

Are you a member of the Barbz, the Munchkins, the Beyhive, or the… Conejitos?! (Benito stans rise!) Well, we’re ready to welcome you into a new community of stans dedicated to the art of manifestation. If you’re not in the know, manifestation is the action that comes from practicing the Law of Attraction by having a positive mindset. Law of Attraction is the idea that what occupies your thoughts, conversations, actions, and deep emotions is what you will manifest. So, the idea is that if we dedicate our energy to being positive about the things we want, they will happen. And it works! However, it doesn’t work alone, one must also do the work (no pun intended). While we have discussed many different methods for manifesting your future career in accounting, we’re here to talk about an underrated approach: mentorship. Walk with us, walk with us…

Benefits of Mentorship

You might be wondering why, out of all the popular go-to options (which we definitely support!) such as vision boarding and repeating manifestation mantras, are we talking about mentorship? Because the purpose of mentors is not only to speak life into our dreams, but also connect us to the tangible resources to make our dreams come true (shameless plug — kind of like Accounting+ 😏).

Within every person’s professional growth journey, there are often challenges. And as a result, it’s human nature to start to doubt ourselves. In order for manifestation to work, it relies on positive self-talk. Total belief in our capabilities and dreams. But the reality is that we can’t always give that to ourselves. That’s where a mentor comes in. They are there to uplift our dreams and validate our skills, potential, and experiences, when we can’t.

Like a pair of old Jordans, goal setting comes with a twin and it’s called accountability. What’s a goal if you’re not staying committed to it? Mentors hold us accountable to our goals by consistently checking in with us about our progress and providing feedback and advice when necessary to ensure we stay on track.

Because one of the best routes to quick career progression is through relationships, mentors place an emphasis on helping us build our network. Don’t trip if you find a mentor with tax accounting experience while you want to pursue forensic accounting. Accounting thrives on collaboration, making it likely that tax professionals have interacted with numerous forensic accountants. They can facilitate introductions, enabling you to gain valuable insights into the specialty and their day-to-day responsibilities.

It's also okay if you haven't found a mentor in accounting yet (But did you check out our Your Career+ Series and reach out via LinkedIn?). Professionals from all walks of life can help you hone the skills that are necessary for accounting (communication and problem solving to name a few), review your resume, and connect you with potential accountants in their circle.

There are endless benefits to having a mentor, but the last one we want to call out is added credibility. Having a mentor signals to job, college, and scholarship reviewers that you’re serious about accounting and achieving success because you’ve already put real action behind it, which is a huge motivating factor when deciding which applicant deserves the opportunity. Hello manifestation coming true! If our manifestations are fulfilled based on what we dedicate time and attention to, what shows that we want something more than going out of our way to find someone who can show us the accounting ropes? Who can tell us the gems they’ve picked up along the way that they wished they would’ve known? Who can tell us how to get the most out of our internships and programs, once we get them (because there’s no ‘if’ with manifestation)? It’s all full circle. 🔁
